Is Epic Seven Worth Playing in 2024?

Epic Seven is a gacha game that has grown a lot over the past couple of years. The game is still popular in many countries and usually hovers in the top 10-20 in the Role Playing games section of the Play Store (Android). To this day, it stands as one of the most highly polished anime-type gachas available on the market.

It’s really a game with a lot of charms, but some factors might bring some players tedium later on. However, it’s still a game to be experienced and enjoyed for its art, strategy, and animations.

Ken is thinking about the next gacha to play.

So the question is if it’s a good time to start Epic Seven, or is it even worth playing Epic Seven now? It’s a great time to start Epic Seven now. Not only are characters, gear, and skins easier to get, but there are a lot of new player catch-up systems in-game that really allow new players to get the hang of the game quickly and easily (even allowing you to choose from a list of some of the rarest characters in the game).

Is Epic Seven a Good Fit For You?

Epic Seven is one of the few gacha games that I have been playing since its launch, and not only does it keep my attention all this time, but every few months, it keeps improving its systems or doing something to make the game better.

However, as an older longer-term player of the game – it’s important to look at the game objectively to see how well this game might last in the future and if it’s worth it to keep pouring time and investment into the game.

Sprites are immaculate.
Sprite to 2d transition is seamless.
It’s hard to fully appreciate without watching gameplay or a video of it in action.

Here are some of the things that put Epic Seven ahead of the rest and some of the things it can improve:

What Players Might Like About Epic SevenWhat Might Put Players Off About Epic Seven
-animation quality (both 2d and sprite) is really top-notch. There is not a game that comes close to the level that Epic Seven does their animations. There are no corners cut in terms of how the game plays and feels.

-the game is great at teaching new systems and is, frankly, very respectful of your time. Most of the tedious things you do in the game can be put on automation which allows you to do other things (get back to studying, student!).

-the hallmark of any good gacha game, the longer you stick with the game – the more you get rewarded. With proper resource management, there isn’t any content or character gated or that you can’t obtain.

-all characters can or will shine. The company behind Epic Seven, Smilegate, has frequent balance updates that keep characters up-to-date and usable in most content. Even 3-star units (that are the easiest to get) are some of the best units in the game.

-PVP is great. While there is a meta, other characters off-meta are still useful and fun to use. Half the fun is theory-crafting different team compositions and tactics.
-It’s turn-based. So the gameplay might be slow for some players. However, it’s not as slow as typical turn-based games. Some stats determine how fast you get your next turn.

-mostly hub-based (meaning everything is accessed through the main menu), the game hides it well, but for the people looking for an adventure, exploration sort of game – Epic Seven is not the one you’re looking for.

-it is a PvP game at heart. There is a lot of PvE content, challenging ones too! However, it all feeds into PvP stuff later on. Guild and Arena participation is essential to getting the resources you need (to get more characters or to keep grinding).

-sometimes, the RNG (random) aspects of the game are a little bit too much, but slowly but surely – that’s being minimized as well through updates and quality of life changes.

-Farming gear and building characters at endgame might become a little bit repetitive if you don’t care about PvP.
Table 1. Epic Seven Notes and Comments

I would talk more about the story, but to be honest, I have no idea what’s going on with the story. Epic Seven, I hear, has an outstanding story, but in the way that’s presented – it’s hard to sit there and read text dialogues (but every so often, they do throw a great animation at you! Including great boss fights, too!). Many people do enjoy the story as it is. So I will leave that to the other people to talk about, so it’s up to you to interpret this part of the game.

Can You Catch Up With Older Veteran Epic Seven Players?

Here are the things that older players have on newer players:

  • A wider depth of characters
  • More gear

Can you catch up with older players in Epic Seven? Definitely, the longer a gacha game is out – the easier things get for new players. The veteran players of the game had to do it the hard way.

With new catch-up mechanics for gear and characters – it’s easy to save up your resources until you’re ready to start the endgame phase of the game. Therefore, having much more resources than veteran players when they reached the same phase before.

Eventually, you’ll be like the rest of us, admiring characters and looking at stats all day long.

As a new player, it’s sort of hard to know about the pathway to the endgame, but it’s really quite simple: work towards progressing in your hunt teams. Starting with Wyvern. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you actually play the game. Once you’re able to complete (and auto), you’re can more easily gear your characters without depending on gear given to you by the game.

In terms of characters – the characters will rain from the sky, to be honest, the longer you play—even the rarest of characters. Just keep steady with your progression, and you’ll find yourself in the sweet spot of resources and gear.

Is Epic Seven Free-To-Play Friendly?

While I can get much more in-depth about the Free-to-Playability of Epic Seven – with the current state of the game, Epic Seven is very free-to-play friendly.

With some time invested in the game and a little luck, you can pull on almost every banner and get the banner character. Even with the worst luck in the world, the game presents you with the banner character after about 120 pulls on the banner. It sounds like a lot, but it can be done within an afternoon if you really wanted the character.

Even the rarest characters in the game (called ML5 characters or Moonlight characters) are guaranteed after 200 pulls on their special banners. However, this will take a much longer time to stock up and get to – but with patience, you can grab any one of your favorite ML5 characters that you need or want. With the recent changes, though, one is given to you straight off the bat as a new player.

The age-old question: do you save or do another pull for the waifu?…

Not to mention, every day, you get a free pull that has the chance to get any character in the game literally. So the more you log in – the more chances you get for the lucky pull you’re were waiting for.

Even the skins in the game are obtainable as a free-to-play player. Again, Epic Seven is a game that rewards its players for showing up and playing the game. Any newly released skin is available to purchase with the farmable currency (Skystones).

After the initial launch period of the skin, the skin gets put into the skin shop, where it is much more difficult to obtain unless you spend real-life dollars or have to wait a really long time to collect the skin tickets (f2p method).

Epic Seven favors the players that can manage their resources. Luck is just a bonus.

How Are The Epic Seven Events and Community?

Epic Seven has weekly streams that show off the upcoming events, upgrades, and changes. It’s fun to look forward to the stream during the week. Every so often, there are larger events (festivals, PvP tournaments, etc.) that span a whole weekend.

During these streams and events, giveaways are frequent, and everybody who attends and watches the events live. The game has become much more generous over time, whether it’s free pulls, currency, or gold.

Streams and events are fun ways to engage with other members of the community! Not to mention get some freebies.

The game has a thriving community even long after its launch (which is hard to say about other games), and not only that – the events and festivals seem to be getting larger in scope and design.

I will continue to monitor the game and its events. Hopefully, the company continues to put in the effort to be involved in the community as they’re doing a great job right now.

What is the Endgame in Epic Seven?

The endgame in Epic Seven is PvP. It always has been and always will be. This can put a lot of people off, but it’s really the strongest factor in driving the longevity of any game. It makes you want always to improve your characters and teams to get to the next level in your PvP journey.

Kayron is about to choke someone out.

In Epic Seven, there are 3 PvP modes:

  1. Arena – fighting the AI of other people’s team
  2. Guildwars – fighting against the AI of other people’s team in the opposing guild
  3. RTA (Real-Time Battle) – drafting your teams to fight against real actual people on the other side

RTA really is the place to be in terms of PvP. The first two are just important for currency farming, but RTA is really the premier mode of Epic Seven. Drafting the right teams, making the right decisions, and maybe getting a little lucky – when you can pull off the win in RTA, it’s extremely satisfying.

Participating in PVP is an addicting gameplay loop:

  1. Obtain the character
  2. Gear them up
  3. Figure out a team composition
  4. Try them in RTA or other PvP modes
  5. Oh – new banner, new character, repeat step 1

As said before, the endgame can be a bit repetitive because oftentimes, you’re doing the same stage repeatedly. Still, thankfully there’s an autorepeat function (in the form of pets), so your characters can farm for you while you do other things.

It can be frustrating if you’re hunting for that one perfect piece of gear only for it to roll badly. Therefore, RNG can take its toll on some people sometimes.

Epic Seven Verdict

Right now, Epic Seven is currently the gold standard in the gacha gaming category. It’s in an interesting place of “the more you play, the less inclined you are to spend” because it really gives you everything you need the more that you play. Sure there are progression plateaus, but a gacha game is all about resource management and pacing. If you try to rush somewhere – it’s generally not a good time.

For me, as a gacha connoisseur (*sips my tea with my pinky out) – I have spent on the game in the beginning because I was enjoying myself with it. However, as I kept playing, there’s no reason to spend at all. I had everything because the game was abundantly rewarding players with what they need (most of the time).
